Cupar and District Swimming Club
members attended the Dyce “Mini Meet” at Northfield Swimming Pool, Aberdeen.
Many of the 17 teams competing were from the area around Aberdeen, with Cupar
being the only one from East Central Scotland. Most of the Cupar and District
swimmers took the journey north on the Saturday night prior to the event, and
enjoyed the team camaraderie at the accommodation. This meet was for younger
swimmers, but all were still expected to conform to international swimming rules
for their strokes.
A total of thirteen Cupar and District
swimmers took part, with swimmers ranging from 8 to 11 years old. The races
were 25 m to 100 m long depending on the age group, and all strokes were swum.
The star of the meet for the Club was
Megan Wilson, and her swim in the 100 m individual medley (one length of each of
the four strokes). Eleven year old Megan won the gold medal for this swim with
her time of 1 minute 34.35 seconds. Megan also won two bronze medals, one for
50 m breaststroke and one for 50 m backstroke.
From 35 swims the Club’s swimmers achieved 23 personal best times. Other medal
winners included 8-year-old Struan Anderson with bronze medals in the 25 m
breaststroke and 25 m butterfly, and 8-year-old Ross McCrostie with a bronze
medal in the 25 m backstroke.
The greatest improvements in personal best times were from 9-year-old Lewis
Baillie, who improved his 100 m individual medley time by 17.98 seconds to
1:52.80 and also his 50 m butterfly time by 7.50 seconds to 56.74 s.
From the 17 teams competing in Aberdeen, Cupar finished a commendable and justly
deserved eighth. Given the limited numbers of swimmers from the Club that were
taking part it was a magnificent achievement for the young swimmers and is a
credit to them.
